Acrylic painting on canvas 47 1/4 x 39 3/8 Inches
In this magnificent painting, Nanang Lugonto highlights one of the favourite rituals and pastimes of Indonesian women, dancing. Nicknamed “Gandrung“, which means dance of love in Indonesian, we can see three young women from Java, dressed for their show. Originally, Gandrung was a dance to honour the God of rice and fertility, Dewi Sri. It has gradually become a widespread and celebrated dance in the villages. With beautiful jewellery, sublime headdresses and magnificent accessories, Nanang Lugonto has made them even more beautiful and has dressed them up in their most beautiful outfits for the occasion. We appreciate the artistic touch of this painter known for his technique known as spatula painting, which creates a striking effect of relief and contrast.
