Ketut, the master of Haute-Couture on bamboo…

In Indonesia, bamboo is the most used material in the manufacture of objects of everyday life. However, the rich properties it contains have gained the interest of the most ingenious and creative Balinese. Thus, thanks to the virtuosity of generations of craftsmen, the work of bamboo has gradually risen to the rank of art.

Today, artisans who perpetuate the true tradition of weaving and painting on bamboo are few. And for cause, it requires a perfect knowledge of the art of weaving on this material difficultly harnessed. Painting is a second challenge. Ketut is one of those incredible artists that we have had the privilege of meeting.

Originally from the charming village of Sidemen, Ketut represents the fourth generation of a family that, for more than a century, has regrown the limits of excellence in the practice of this art.

This unparalleled know-how led us to imagine, in partnership with Ketut, a unique handmade case (The My O’BE Case on www.my-obe.com), made up of bamboo and banana bark. Indeed, this bark produces fibres of origin entirely natural, perfectly adapted for weaving.

A state of mind apart, an unequalled dexterity and immeasurable patience… these are as much quality as Ketut has developed over the years before becoming, as he likes to say, the “Master of Haute-Couture on Bamboo”. Ketut is nonetheless humble despite his certain notoriety within his village (and far beyond). He points out that there are still many challenges to be faced and that nothing is being gained. He likes to look at new projects and continually rethink his own technique, even though “before we even talk about techniques, it’s a matter of posture, conscience,” he says.
