This superb painting depicts the portrait of a Balinese man whose features are perfectly portrayed. The artist Symon is known for his talent as a portraitist and analyses each feature of a face which he likes to then highlight and caricature, while still keeping a sense of realism in mind.
Through this magnificent work, we can perceive the intensity of this man’s gaze which is divided between inner peace, typical of the Hindu religion, and the strength of nature and the elements, such as the erupting volcanoes, symbolised by the use of red in the background.
