Acrylic painting on linen canvas 78 3/4 x 98 1/2 Inches
The Strait of Malacca is a stretch of water that geographically sits between the Malay Peninsula and Indonesian island of Sumatra, extending into the south of Singapore. Historically and into modern times, the Malacca Straits is known as a site of bustling maritime activities, facilitating the spread and exchange of goods and cultures between the countries in the region.
In this work, Kabul portrays a romanticized painting of imagined characters a long the straits. The pirates dance on a blue inflatable that symbolizes a false sense freedom. Indeed, emerging from the waters is a female character whose name is “Inem”, a typical Javanese nickname that sexualizes foreign domestic workers. Floating ominously in the background is a spy that constantly puts all the activities within the image under constant surveillance.
A painting which emphasizes the cultural taboos. The nations in their post-colonial identities struggle to define themselves. Despite having a shared history and ancestry, the ownership of traditions in the region are constantly in dispute, turning the people into pirates of their own heritages.
